Chandonnet, Fern (ed). Alaska at War. Anchorage, AK: Alaska at War Committee, 1995.
455 pages Introduction; acknowledgements; photos; maps; bibliography; index. This hefty, very-nicely produced tome contains over 60 papers presented at the "Alaska at War Symposium" in Anchorage in November 1993. Subject areas include "War in the North Pacific", "The Alaska Highway", and "Lend-Lease", and wander as far afield as "Minorities in Alaska's Military", "Aleut Relocation and Restitution", and "Historic Preservation". Within the military topics, chapters cover the air raid on Dutch harbor, initial Japanese landings on Attu and Kiska, and the ensuing US-Canadian campaign to recover the occupied islands. Among the many authors are Brian Garfield, Alvin D. Coox, Hisashi Takahashi, and Admiral James Russell. R. Bruce Parham contributes a broad and far-ranging bibliography. While the bulk of the book is devoted to Home Front topics, there is much useful material here. A very nice complement to Garfield's The Thousand-Mile War and Kevin D. Hutchinson's World War II in the North Pacific: Chronology and Fact Book. Available from Alaska Humanities Forum, 421 West First Avenue, Suite 210, Anchorage, AK 99501 for $43.90 (which includes shipping and handling). All proceeds "help make possible humanities programs in communities throughout Alaska." Thanks to the Alaska Humanities Forum for providing this copy. Reviewed 13 May 1996
