This day in history Sixty-five years ago today, on 27 May 1944, the war continued to rage around the globe. In Europe, while the Russian Front remained quiet, the Allied bombing offensive grew in ferocity and the US 5th Army and British 8th Army pushed toward Rome. In the Pacific and Asia, the US 41st Infantry Division landed on Biak Island, the Japanese 11th Army opened offensive operations against US airbases in China, the Chinese Y Force advanced slowly on the Salween Front, fighting raged around Myitkyina in Burma, and the battles at Kohima and Imphal continued unabated.
In memoriam USMC Brigadier General Frederick J. Karchwho as a young officer served with the 12th Marines and 14th Marines during the battles for Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jimadied on 23 May in Virginia at the age of 91.

News from Eric Hammel We don't actually have a Kindle, but we're fascinated by the concept of putting a serious collection of WWII books on a single electronic device for easy reading, searching, and annotating. Eric Hammel, author of a wealth of military titles and proprietor of the recently revived Pacifica Military Press, tells us his classic Air War Pacific Chronology (difficult to find on the secondhand market and quite expensive) is now available in an electronic version for the Kindle.
